Movia

“Wine is a gift for the Soul. I’ve done my part. Now it’s in your hands…”
Aleš Kristančič

The Movia estate has existed since 1700 and has been in the hands of the Kristančič family since 1820. The estate covers 18 hectares of land, half of which lie on the Italian side of the Collio. This is an area of with Mediterranean climate, moderate summers and sufficient precipitation that makes the Brda region ideal for the production of dry wine. The vicinity of Alpine peaks provides just the right amounts of cool air for higher levels of acids and aromatic substances to develop in the grapes.

In keeping with the family’s decades of winemaking endeavour, Aleš – the visionary owner of Movia – honed his skills doing a research apprenticeships at Bordeaux’s Château Pétrus and Burgundy’s Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. He retuned back home with an idea of a completely different concept of wine production, enriched with new knowledge of modern winemaking.

Paying enormous and religious respects for the vineyard he applied biodynamic farming in a soil primarily made of flysch, with the idea to create wines that are deeply expressive of their place of origin.

His viticultural and winemaking philosophy cannot be understood as solely traditional or even purely natural. The Aleš distinctive peculiar winemaking is based on an extraordinarily long maceration in old Slovenian oak with no stirring. Racking is never performed, and the fining and filtering procedures are governed by the moon calendar. Aleš idea is to produce incomparable wines in authenticity and unmatched in their purity of expression.

A Mediterranean climate with moderate summers and sufficient precipitation all make the Brda region ideal for the production of dry wine. The vicinity of Alpine peaks provides just the right amounts of cool air for higher levels of acids and aromatic substances to develop in the grapes compared to other Mediterranean regions.

The Movia brand is among the most important and most frequently awarded wines in South-Eastern Europe.
